Appearing in Nature Nanotechnology today is a News & Views article I wrote titled “Probing the depths of battery heterogeneity.” I discuss the importance of an exciting new research article by Raj Pandya et al., “Three-dimensional operando optical imaging of particle and electrolyte heterogeneities inside Li-ion batteries.” Looking at their results from a broader context, I explain what it means in terms of understanding battery electrode kinetics. In short, we need to depart from the approximation that models an ensemble of battery particles as an effective single particle.
I hope my article helps people contextualize the importance of the results reported by Pandya et al.
